Shahad's actions

Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks

Building With Carbon Storing Waste Products

Engineered Sinks

I will spend at least 60 minutes researching how people can build with carbon-storing materials - including agricultural byproducts - and discuss it with my peers or post to social media.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Transportation

Go for a Daily Walk

Walkable Cities

I will take a walk for 20 minutes each day and take note of the infrastructure that makes walking more or less enjoyable, accessible, and possible.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Electricity

Learn More About Geothermal Energy

Geothermal Power

I will spend at least 60 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of geothermal energy and consider investing in this technology.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Industry

Practice the 5 Rs

Recycling

I will practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Industry

Recycle Everything I Can

Recycling; Recycled Metals; Recycled Plastics

Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, including electronics and metals.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Food, Agriculture, and Land Use

More Fruits And Veggies

I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 1 cups of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.

COMPLETED 0
DAILY ACTIONS

Buildings

Research Heat Pumps

High-Efficiency Heat Pumps

I will spend at least 30 minutes researching heat pumps to see if installing one makes sense for my home/building.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Food, Agriculture, and Land Use

Reduce Food Waste

Reduced Food Waste

I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during Drawdown Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.

DAILY ACTIONS

Land Sinks

Explore My Area

Sometimes protecting nature requires feeling connected to nature. I will invest 20 minutes in exploring and appreciating a natural area in my region, whether a forest, wetland, coastal area, or somewhere else.

Industry

Go Paperless

Recycled Paper

I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions, and opting out of junk mail.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Electricity
Geothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. In what ways (i.e. with money, time, advocacy) can you invest in geothermal energy?

    Shahad Aljoued 10/11/2023 11:13 PM
I can invest in geothermal energy by educating myself and others about the benefits of geothermal energy, both environmentally and economically. Also, joining or supporting organizations and campaigns that promote renewable energy sources, including geothermal.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
How feasible do you think it is for society to build with agricultural waste products?

    Shahad Aljoued 10/11/2023 11:00 PM
The feasibility of building with agricultural waste products is promising, and as awareness of their benefits continues to grow, we can expect to see more widespread adoption of these materials in construction projects. The use of agricultural waste materials has gained traction in recent years due to their numerous benefits, including resource efficiency, reduced environmental impact, and economic advantages.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation
What have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?

I have noticed that walking can have a positive impact on mood since it is considered a form of exercise. I particularly enjoy walking on rainy or cloudy days because I love this type of weather. In my opinion, several infrastructure changes could enhance the walking experience. Well-maintained sidewalks, free from cracks and uneven surfaces, are essential for a safe and enjoyable walking experience. Additionally, well-placed street lighting improves safety and allows for more enjoyable walks, especially in the evenings.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry
What are some more "Rs" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?

    Shahad Aljoued's avatar
    Shahad Aljoued 10/11/2023 10:45 PM
    1) Rethink: Rethinking your purchasing decisions is a critical step in reducing waste. think if you truly need a product, and whether it is reusable or recyclable.
    2) Reduce Food Waste: Implement strategies to reduce food waste, such as meal planning, and proper storage. Composting food scraps that can't be consumed is another way to minimize food waste.
    3) Rent: Instead of buying items that you only need occasionally, consider renting or sharing with others.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry
How could you incorporate other "Rs" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "Rs" make you feel?

Incorporating the 5 Rs have a significant positive impact on both my personal well-being and the environment. For reduce, I try to turn off electronics and power when not in use. For reuse, I use reusable shopping bags whenever I go shopping. For refuse, I try to refuse using single-use items like straws and plastic shopping bags. For repair, I try to fix or repair some broken items like clothing to expand their lifespan and not throw them away which can contribute to increasing waste. For repurpose, I try to use some items for different purposes like using glass jars for storing or decorating. Implementing these Rs gives a feeling of accomplishment and leads to a sense of personal responsibility and a positive impact on the environment.
