Buildings
Fix Leaky Faucets
Low-Flow Fixtures
I will fix faucets or report leaky faucets to facilities that have been wasting up to 9 gallons (34 L) of water a day or 270 (1,020 L) gallons of water a month per faucet.
Electricity
Choose LED Bulbs
LED Lighting
I will replace 2 incandescent lightbulbs with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Industry
Practice the 5 Rs
Recycling
I will practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Learn About Cattle Farming
Improved Cattle Feed; Improved Manure Management
I will spend 30 minutes researching cattle feed and manure management, or visiting a dairy farm to learn about their farming practices.
Buildings
Online Energy Audit
Multiple Solutions
I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Smaller Portions
Reduced Food Waste
I will use smaller plates and/or serve smaller portions when dishing out food.
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Cook With Seaweed
Seaweed Farming
I will use seaweed in a new recipe.
Transportation
Use Public Transit
Public Transit
I will use public transit 7 miles per day and avoid sending up to (___) lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Transportation
Go for a Daily Walk
Walkable Cities
I will take a walk for 15 minutes each day and take note of the infrastructure that makes walking more or less enjoyable, accessible, and possible.
Health and Education
Connect With A Nonprofit
Family Planning and Education
I will connect with a local nonprofit working on issues affecting women, girls, trans people, and/or nonbinary people in my community, and find out how I can get involved or become a member.
Land Sinks
Buy Bamboo
Bamboo Production
When they are available, I will purchase products made from bamboo instead of wood, plastic, or metal.
Industry
Recycle Everything I Can
Recycling; Recycled Metals; Recycled Plastics
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, including electronics and metals.
Buildings
Research Retrofitting Incentives
Building Retrofitting
I will spend at least 15 minutes finding out if my city, region, state, or country offers incentives for retrofitting existing buildings.
Industry
Research Cement Alternatives
Alternative Cement
I will spend at least 25 minutes researching cement alternatives that reduce the carbon footprint of concrete.
Transportation
Improve a Bus Stop
Public Transit
I will improve a bus stop in my neighborhood by posting the stop schedule, adding seating or shelter, adding art or flowers, picking up litter, or implementing some other small improvement.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
New Farming Systems
Learn how space is being best utilized to grow food from single plants to full multi level complexes.
Transportation
Research and Consider Switching to a Hybrid or Electric Vehicle
Electric Cars, Hybrid Cars
I will spend at least 20 minutes researching and weighing my options to see if a hybrid or electric vehicle makes sense for my lifestyle.
Transportation
Test Drive an Electric Bike
Electric Bicycles
I will test drive an electric bike at a local distributor to see if it makes sense to use one in place of my car, or to extend the area I can cover by bike.
Health and Education
Learn about the Need for Family Planning
Family Planning and Education
I will spend at least 20 minutes learning more about the need for family planning globally.

REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationHalf of all trips made in the US are three miles or less; 72% of them are driven. Private vehicles account for 60% of trips of a mile or less. Do you often drive short distances instead of biking or walking? If so, how might incorporating an electric bike into your lifestyle help you make more climate-friendly choices?
T.J. Anderson 10/22/2023 9:28 PMDo not try to ride a bike if you have balance issues. If I feel well it may be a good idea but as it stands I think I will stick to the chevralegs and the public transit. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationReducing (or eliminating) exhaust emissions and improving public health are two benefits of green vehicles. What other motivators inspire you to consider switching to a more fuel-efficient vehicle?
T.J. Anderson 10/22/2023 9:27 PMI think it bares to look at other fuel sources because there are capabilities for hydrogen with water as exhaust that was made back in the 70's if memory serves and there is always a way to use power if I can get enough of it cleanly. -
T.J. Anderson 10/17/2023 4:44 PMSo I found that rubber erasers will help with a little elbow grease begin to remove the graffiti from the plexiglass covering the bus schedules. I feel the white ones work better. If someone else tries it for a moment tell me what you think. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationHow can you advocate for transportation systems which minimize environmental impact while also meeting human needs?

REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustryConcrete is a good example of a material that most of us encounter every day, but its carbon footprint may not be obvious. What other everyday materials might have a large carbon footprint? How can you find out more?
T.J. Anderson 10/15/2023 12:37 PMWhat I like about cement alternatives is it sounds sometimes like they just tried a bunch of things at random and a lot of it worked. "dude, we got a bunch of sawdust." "Let's mix some in the concrete and see what happens." Repeat for mycellium, broken glass, silica powder, hemp, paper products, rust, slag from blast furnaces, with all of them having positive effects. Makes me think cement will turn into an ice cream style sales service where you can mix in your own for small projects and buy their formulas in bulk for larger ones.-
Mary Hanks 10/15/2023 2:25 PMI love the ice cream style sales analogy. :) I hope that if it happens, that enough people would be ordering sustainable mixes that those would move from custom orders to a regularly listed project.

T.J. Anderson 10/15/2023 12:16 PMAnd because I mixed up my recycle posts. Learning about how plastics are having issues being broken down even now and while metal can be easily worked into other things or rehandled for objects, plastics don't break down that well, I have been trying to find different ways to use the containers I do go through in the apartment. I feel maybe something has to be added to the process of making the plastic to make it easier to break down but finding something that works like that so it can easily be broken down and reformed.-
Mary Hanks 10/15/2023 2:29 PMI was trying to figure out how to repurpose the plastic containers that the treats the local cats (my own and the ferals I serve) demand, and it turns out that they fit beautifully in the fridge and freezer for leftovers. Yes, I know I can't reheat in them, but if I let them defrost for a little while, I can transfer the contents to a microwavable dish.

REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustryHow could you incorporate other "Rs" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "Rs" make you feel?
T.J. Anderson 10/15/2023 11:35 AMWe actually like using something we already have for something we need. good example my apartment has an old fireplace. A couple paper bags filled with a weeks worth of lint trappings shredded extra bags and a either last bits of either vaseline jelly from a container wax items, bacon fat or extra oil left in the pan poured in and scrunched up gives a good base for the logs and easy to start, -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildingsHow can you share what you have learned in your research with others?
T.J. Anderson 10/14/2023 12:29 AMThe city of portland had committed money for 150 fomes to be retrofit for earthquakes, considering they are talking about a waitlist it may be very popular. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered SinksWhat recipe did you make and how did it turn out? Will you cook with seaweed again?
T.J. Anderson 10/14/2023 12:25 AMLearned how to make some miso soup, to do it right some seaweed is needed to make the broth, it adds a nice refreshing sea salt herbal quality to it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand SinksAre bamboo alternatives readily available in your community? If not, what are other sustainable alternatives?
T.J. Anderson 10/14/2023 12:24 AMBamboo based paper was a little interesting to use, may be fun to try drawing with charcoal on.
