How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?

I think spending time outdoors, at least for me, gives me a break from the outside world. When I’m spending time outdoors whether it be going to the park or going for a hike, it always brings me peace and makes me feel less stressed. It allows me to take everything in and appreciate what nature provides us. Sometimes I just walk and look around at the trees around me, appreciating all the positive things they provide for us and the beauty of it all.

What did you learn about the climate impact of refrigerants? How do supermarkets contribute to this impact?

    Maddielynn A Bee's avatar
    Maddielynn A Bee 10/14/2023 8:27 PM
I wasn’t very aware of this issue and learned how much of an impact it has on warming the atmosphere, even more than CO2. All from the production of them, running them, leakages, and end of life disposal causes major issues in contributing to climate change. I learned what companies are working towards reducing the refrigerants used in their grocery stores, like Aldi and Whole Foods being the top 2. According to climatefriendlysupermarkets.org, a U.S supermarket leaks 25% of its refrigerant gasses a year which is equal to 49 billion coal being burned a year.

What was an inspiring thing you learned in Drawdown's Climate Solutions 101 Series?

    Maddielynn A Bee's avatar
    Maddielynn A Bee 10/09/2023 2:12 PM
They discuss the importance of leadership towards the end of the series which is definitely an important aspect of enacting change in communities. Having leaders to stand up for these environmental issues is crucial and will be the most important when looking towards making changes for the future.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?

    Maddielynn A Bee's avatar
    Maddielynn A Bee 10/09/2023 1:51 PM
For me, I think eating smaller portions can help with not getting full as fast and taking my time. I’m more aware of how much I’m eating instead of just stuffing myself because I don’t want to throw out food that I can’t eat. So, better digestion and control of the food I’m eating. Also, it could save money because the other meals could be saved for the next day or something.

What did you cook and how did it turn out? Can you share a recipe on the feed for others to try?

I decided to cook salmon bowls with alaskan sockeye salmon from a local seafood market. It’s a super easy recipe: cut up salmon cubes, 1 tbsp garlic powder, 1 tbsp sriracha, and 1 tbsp soy sauce. Mix it and then pan fry. I like to eat mine with furikake, rice, and nori seaweed on the side.

After you determined your carbon footprint, did you see what different choices you can make in order to reduce it?

    Maddielynn A Bee's avatar
    Maddielynn A Bee 10/05/2023 9:00 PM
Probably less driving and more carpooling, walking, or using public transportation. I travel quite often back to home which is more than 4 hours away which contributes a lot to my carbon footprint. However, I think cutting down on little things I can control would be best for me such as driving less and not using as much energy.

Many states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?

    Maddielynn A Bee's avatar
    Maddielynn A Bee 10/05/2023 8:51 PM
According to Oregon.gov, there are some advisors on eating fish in certain regions of Oregon; They have a map where you can select your region and see what advisories there are in certain water bodies and particularly what contaminants there might be. For the willamette area, resident fish seem to be affected by contaminants like PCB and Hg. Considering resident fish are those who stay in one area and don’t migrate like salmon for example, I think my diet choices fall within these guidelines and I don’t need to alter the kind of fish I eat since I mainly eat salmon. However, I think being aware of these contaminants is good to know for future use when deciding what fish are good/or not good to eat.
