Test Drive an Electric Bike
Electric Bicycles
I will test drive an electric bike at a local distributor to see if it makes sense to use one in place of my car, or to extend the area I can cover by bike.

LED Lighting
I will replace 6 incandescent lightbulbs with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Land Sinks
Forest-Friendly Foods 2
Tropical Forest Restoration
I will replace or remove the palm oil, coffee, and cocoa products in my current diet that are known to contribute to deforestation.

Learn More about Wave and Tidal Energy
Ocean Power
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of wave and tidal energy.
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Smart Seafood Choices
Ocean Farming
I will visit seafoodwatch.org and download the app to commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.

Support Businesses Owned by Women, POC, or Immigrants
Sustainable Intensification for Smallholders
I will spend 45 minutes researching and shopping from 3 businesses owned by women, people of color, or immigrants.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Support Local Food Systems
Plant-Rich Diets
I will source 45 percent of my food from local producers each day. This could include signing up for a local CSA, buying from a farmer's market, visiting a food co-op, foraging with a local group, or growing my own ingredients.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Reduce Food Waste
Reduced Food Waste
I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during Drawdown Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.
Transportation
Stay on the Ground
Telepresence, High-Speed Rail
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land UseWhat did you learn from visiting or researching a dairy farm?
Zoe Black 10/08/2023 8:31 PMWhen researching what cows eat, I found that it is mainly hay or grass and they benefit from produce such as apples, bananas, carrots, even cactus, and more. It makes the most sense to let your cows graze on grass in the pasture as it is what they would eat in the wild and something that their stomach digests the best. The issue is that some farms don’t have enough pasture space to allow rotational grazing. This would result in their pastures not being able to keep up with the grazing and the cattle would eat the pasture bald. That is where hay comes in. This can be an issue for smaller farms, but also an issue for factory farms. They are unethically overcrowded and don’t have enough grass for all the cattle or any grass at all. This is why looking for grass fed on the supermarket label is best when buying beef because it is more likely coming from a more ethical farm that allows their cattle to graze and it is a more healthy food choice for cattle. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustryHow close is the nearest climate-friendly supermarket to your home? How could you encourage local supermarket to reduce or phase out their use of HFC refrigerants?
Zoe Black 10/08/2023 6:33 PMThe closest supermarket with a green mark (HFC- free) is Whole Foods in Lake Oswego. Closer than that there is a Fred Meyer in Eugene, but it is in the orange category meaning some refrigerants are used. I could schedule a meeting with someone in the supermarket who has control over the refrigerants they use and discuss the harmful chemicals and emissions that come from their use. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildingsWhat are some of the benefits of making your home more energy efficient?
Zoe Black 10/08/2023 6:12 PMAfter learning more about the different ways to insulate my home, I will see a couple different benefits. Starting with saving money, insulating my home in areas such as crawl spaces, attics, doors, and windows, my home will be able to hold its temperature much better. This would mean that I pay less for electric bills as my thermostat is not working as hard to regulate the temperature in my house. This would also maximize my comfort as my house will stay at my desired temperature more consistently. I am specifically thinking about the ice store my family went through in 2021. My house got cold quickly and with the power out we began freezing. If our home was more insulated we would have been able to heat up the house manually with our gas stove or at least kept the heat in for longer. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationHalf of all trips made in the US are three miles or less; 72% of them are driven. Private vehicles account for 60% of trips of a mile or less. Do you often drive short distances instead of biking or walking? If so, how might incorporating an electric bike into your lifestyle help you make more climate-friendly choices?
Zoe Black 10/08/2023 6:04 PMI typically bike to school everyday. I live off campus and when I need to get to class I enjoy getting exercise on the way. The only time I drive short distances is to the grocery store or other errands around town. These trips are about 3-5 miles and I am not sure if I could always ride an electric bike to them. I would typically have three grocery bags, or a 50 pound dog food bag. That would make it hard for me to use a bike at all. I make all of these trips at once to minimize going back and forth. I had thought an electric bike would work for me, but unfortunately I don’t think that it will after doing more research and test driving my friend's model. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustryWhat actions will you take to green your job?
Zoe Black 10/08/2023 5:57 PMI am eager to start the climate conversation at my job. I work at a dog kennel/ boarding facility. We use a lot of cleaners and different materials to complete our daily tasks. I plan to talk to our leadership about changing some of the things we do or materials we use to make our facility more sustainable. We write intake cards every day for every dog that comes in. I have been thinking for a while now that we could laminate enough cards for each cubby and then we would no longer be throwing away paper. Our cleaners are all environmentally friendly because they need to be dog safe. I think that talking to my whole team about going more green we could come up with more ideas of how to make our facility better.
