Eliot's actions
Transportation
Go for a Daily Walk
Walkable Cities
I will take a walk for 45 minutes each day and take note of the infrastructure that makes walking more or less enjoyable, accessible, and possible.
Electricity
Choose Renewable Energy or Purchase Renewable Energy Credits
Onshore Wind Turbines, Utility-Scale Solar Photovoltaics
I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will purchase Renewable Energy Credits to match my usage.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Reduce Food Waste
Reduced Food Waste
I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during Drawdown Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.
Electricity
Learn More about Micro Wind
Micro Wind Turbines
I will spend at least 25 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of micro wind.
Industry
Research the Climate Impact of Refrigerants
Refrigerant Management
I will spend 45 minutes learning about the climate impact of refrigerants and what climate-friendly refrigerants are by using the links below.
Electricity
Learn More About Geothermal Energy
Geothermal Power
I will spend at least 40 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of geothermal energy and consider investing in this technology.
Electricity
Learn More about Biomass
Biomass Power
I will spend at least 10 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of biomass.
Land Sinks
Forest-Friendly Foods 1
Tropical Forest Restoration
I will spend at least 20 minutes researching the impact of my diet to see how it contributes to deforestation.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
Reduced Food Waste
I will spend at least 10 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Land Sinks
Learn More about Silvopasture
Silvopasture
I will spend at least 10 minutes watching videos and/or reading about the environmental benefits of silvopasture.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand SinksHad you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?
Eliot Boniske 10/31/2023 10:40 AMI had not heard of silvopasture before, The biggest advantage of silvopasture I learned about is that it can reduce greenhouse gas emissions. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land UseHow does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?
Eliot Boniske 10/30/2023 11:14 AMI will view expiration dates differently by treating them not as an expiration date but as what they are called, a sell buy date, a best before date or a best if used by date. Using this information I feel like I will waste much less food and also end up having our family save more money. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand SinksHow is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?
Eliot Boniske 10/30/2023 10:43 AMMy diet is impacting deforestation because it contains products such as palm oil, cocoa and meat and egg products. These industries all impact deforestation. I can choose alternatives to these products or make sure they are sourced in a way that does not result in deforestation.-
Jeanne Poirier 10/30/2023 8:21 PMGood luck on that - there are great documentaries on what we eat and impacts on our earth. Incredibly helpful to make a change.

REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricityHad you ever heard of biomass technology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share your new knowledge with your friends!
Eliot Boniske 10/25/2023 10:59 AMI have heard of biomass before, but I was not sure on what is was about. The thing I learned that surprised me the most was that an aquatic plant like algae could be used in biomass. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricityGeothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. In what ways (i.e. with money, time, advocacy) can you invest in geothermal energy?
Eliot Boniske 10/24/2023 11:10 AMFor increasing the implementation of passive geothermal heat pumps, lawmakers could pass policies that give tax incestives to building owners. For increasing the number of active geothermal power plants, lawmakers could earmark money for these large scale projects. -
Eliot Boniske 10/17/2023 10:52 AMMy Drawdown Ecochallenge is going very well. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustryWhat did you learn about the climate impact of refrigerants? How do supermarkets contribute to this impact?
Eliot Boniske 10/17/2023 10:51 AMI learned that the impact of refrigerants is very bad as they are much more potent than greenhouse gasses like Co2. Supermarkets contribute to this by using tons of refrigeration. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricityMicro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?
Eliot Boniske 10/06/2023 11:11 AMThey could be put on big buildings like the Civic center or the parking deck and they can be put in extra areas like most rooftops in the city. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land UseAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?
Eliot Boniske 10/05/2023 11:31 AMI would rather use this money to have fun with the family and go on longer or nicer vacations. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Eliot Boniske 10/04/2023 12:05 PMI have noticed that there are much less people walking on weekdays then weekends. I enjoy walking with the dog. The infrastructure where I walk is very good and I don't think it needs to be changed.
