Sophia's actions
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Smaller Portions
Reduced Food Waste
I will use smaller plates and/or serve smaller portions when dishing out food.
Transportation
Go by Bike
Bicycle Infrastructure
I will commute by bike 5 miles each day and avoid sending up to (___) lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Industry
Recycle Everything I Can
Recycling; Recycled Metals; Recycled Plastics
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, including electronics and metals.
Industry
Find a Local Climate-Friendly Supermarket
Refrigerant Management
I will explore the interactive map in the links below to find a supermarket that does not use HFC refrigerants near my home.
Health and Education
Support Businesses Owned by Women, POC, or Immigrants
Sustainable Intensification for Smallholders
I will spend 30 minutes researching and shopping from 1 businesses owned by women, people of color, or immigrants.
Electricity

Geothermal Power
I will spend at least 15 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of geothermal energy and consider investing in this technology.

Land Sinks
Learn about Temperate Forests
Temperate Forest Restoration
I will spend at least 15 minutes learning more about the environmental services provided by and the environmental issues affecting temperate forests.
Electricity
Limit wasteful energy usage
My goal is to make sure all my lights and devices are unplugged when I leave the house in the morning to eliminate and superfluous energy consumption. I chose this because I live in a house with four other people and sometimes it's hard to manage responsibilities!
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Learn about Biochar
Biochar Production
I will spend 15 minutes learning about biochar and how it can help sequester carbon.

REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustryHow close is the nearest climate-friendly supermarket to your home? How could you encourage local supermarket to reduce or phase out their use of HFC refrigerants?
Sophia Brownlee 10/10/2023 4:42 PMThe closest, and only, climate-friendly supermarket I found was a Whole Foods located in Lake Oswego, Oregon. Because of the lack of data on the map provided, I'm guessing that there may be one closer. I think the best way to encourage local supermakets to phase out the use of HFC refrigerants would be to build awareness around the topic and educate my peers. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and EducationWhich businesses that you researched are you excited to support? Are you already supporting businesses that you didn't know were owned by women, people of color, or immigrants?
Sophia Brownlee 10/10/2023 4:39 PMI found a local woman-owned business that specializes in customizable gift baskets with solely Oregon-made products. These would make a great birthday or holiday gift! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationHow does using human-powered transportation make you feel compared to using other methods of transportation?
Sophia Brownlee 10/10/2023 4:35 PMUsing human-powered transportation makes me feel much more accomplished and less stressed because I don't have to fight for parking! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustryHow could you incorporate other "Rs" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "Rs" make you feel?
Sophia Brownlee 10/10/2023 2:01 PMRepair and repurposing are big for me, one of my hobbies is repairing used outdoor gear for continued use. Repurposing also brings a sense of fulfillment and is a great creative outlet. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land UseWhile dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?
Sophia Brownlee 10/09/2023 9:16 PMEating smaller portions, in some cases, may be better for our personal health. While proper portion size is only one component of healthy eating practices, there's potential for changing the way we (as a country) understand, respect, and eat food that could slightly lessen the demand on our healthcare system, and the associated resources needed to support as many people.
