I learned that it is not very difficult to make an impact. I hardly missed the meat from my meals, and I think it's something I'd like to stick with. I also learned about alternative fuel sources I hadn't heard of before. It's inspiring to see how many people took part of the challenge.

It's fairly easy to not eat meat, and I'm enjoying it quite a bit. When I eat meat, historically, I tend to push the idea of what I'm eating away- which isn't always easy. I was raised vegetarian, so meat is not something that I've taken for granted or been able to enjoy without thinking about the animal and how it ended up on my plate. I'm enjoying my meals more since I'm not avoiding some aspect of my meal that causes me to feel bad.

Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?

The production of meat is an expensive one, taking more energy, land and water to produce. Moneyed countries have greater resources for more expensive products, as well as a culture of meat eating as status. That steak and lobster date, or the steak dinner for an important client. Eating more meat taxes our heart health, maintaining healthy body mass, is hard on the environment and slaughterhouse work is one of the most dangerous fields of work which often exploits undocumented workers.
If I choose to continue to eat meat, I think I've just talked myself into sourcing local eggs and meat from farmers who are practicing more sustainable and humane production.

I don't drink much anyway, so rather than doing a sober October I'll be doing a vegetarian October. I don't eat much meat either, but this will force me to be more creative in sourcing healthy proteins which will hopefully help me feel more fluent in vegetarian cooking. Side challenge will be getting my kids to eat more beans and legumes as well.
