I learned that there are several types of structures that can be used to capture wave and tidal energy. One is a tidal barrage, which is a structure similar to a dam but placed across the mouth of an inlet or lagoon. These generate electricity from both the incoming and outgoing tides, but negatively impact marine ecosystems in the area. Tidal turbines are basically much stronger wind turbines that are anchored to the sea floor near the coast; because they have to be stronger and they are underwater, they are much more expensive to build. Tidal energy can be extremely efficient because of the density of water if implemented properly; however, the structures are expensive, and require at least a 10 foot tidal range.

Corvallis can prevent green gentrification from happening by ensuring services and places are still accessible to everyone, regardless of socioeconomic status. For example, maintaining the no-fee policy for the bus system even if the current buses are swapped out for more expensive electric buses. This would also include providing resources for residents on how to make small, realistic changes in their own lives to be more sustainable.

    Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?

From a health standpoint, it is better to serve smaller portions because if you are full after eating part of a larger portion, you still feel pressured to eat the rest to prevent food waste. If you start with less food, this problem can be avoided, and you can always get more food if you want to. In turn, this promotes mindful eating because people are forced to evaluate whether they actually want more food or not.

Mindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?

When I practice mindfulness while eating, I am more present and usually enjoy the food more. Being mindful means I taste more, as my brain isn’t trying to focus on more things at the same time. That being said, I also notice more when the food I’m eating is not good, for the same reason. Additionally, I’m better able to recognize when I’m full.
