I started nature-scaping my backyard this year. As a result, this is the first year I've been able to look out my back windows and see wildflowers, pollinators, wildlife, and beauty. I have planted a total of 4 trees total in the space. The shade from the trees will eventually provide cover over my house which will decrease heat in my house in the summer, which is definitely good for my physical health. Watching the birds and pollinators and squirrels frolic in my yard increases my spiritual and mental health.

What coastal site did you visit and what did you learn while there?

In Lincoln City on Nelscott Beach I saw evidence of bull kelp that had washed ashore. Researching bull kelp, I learned that this organism supports a vertical habitat structure, which you don't often see in the ocean. Reefs with kelp beds provide cover for fish and invertebrate ocean species, and can support an understory of algae and attached invertebrates. Some fish species rely on this cover for protection before they grow and move to deeper reefs. I grew up on the Southern Oregon coast and didn't know much about the bull kelp we would frequently see on the beach. The Southern Oregon coast holds 92% of the state's bull kelp, but to see it in Nelscott Beach seems to me to be indicative of a healthy reef offshore Lincoln City.
