Kristina's actions
Industry
Practice the 5 Rs
Recycling
I will practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
Electricity
Learn More about Micro Wind
Micro Wind Turbines
I will spend at least 60 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of micro wind.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Support Local Food Systems
Plant-Rich Diets
I will source 15 percent of my food from local producers each day. This could include signing up for a local CSA, buying from a farmer's market, visiting a food co-op, foraging with a local group, or growing my own ingredients.
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Visit the Coast
Macroalgae Protection and Restoration
I will visit a coastal or ocean site to experience the ecosystem and look for the presence of macroalgae/seaweed.
Health and Education
Help Students Overcome Health Barriers
Family Planning and Education
I will donate 10 Femme Kits to help people who menstruate overcome health and sanitation barriers to being able to attend school.
Transportation
Improve a Bus Stop
Public Transit
I will improve a bus stop in my neighborhood by posting the stop schedule, adding seating or shelter, adding art or flowers, picking up litter, or implementing some other small improvement.
Land Sinks
Plant Trees
Temperate Forest Restoration
I will plant 2 trees in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Buildings
Learn about 'Green Gentrification'
Multiple Solutions
I will spend at least 60 minutes learning about green gentrification and how it relates to city planning for climate action.
Transportation
Go for a Daily Walk
Walkable Cities
I will take a walk for 10 minutes each day and take note of the infrastructure that makes walking more or less enjoyable, accessible, and possible.

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand SinksHow is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?
Kristina Franklin 10/30/2023 10:50 AMI started nature-scaping my backyard this year. As a result, this is the first year I've been able to look out my back windows and see wildflowers, pollinators, wildlife, and beauty. I have planted a total of 4 trees total in the space. The shade from the trees will eventually provide cover over my house which will decrease heat in my house in the summer, which is definitely good for my physical health. Watching the birds and pollinators and squirrels frolic in my yard increases my spiritual and mental health. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered SinksWhat coastal site did you visit and what did you learn while there?
Kristina Franklin 10/16/2023 11:00 AMIn Lincoln City on Nelscott Beach I saw evidence of bull kelp that had washed ashore. Researching bull kelp, I learned that this organism supports a vertical habitat structure, which you don't often see in the ocean. Reefs with kelp beds provide cover for fish and invertebrate ocean species, and can support an understory of algae and attached invertebrates. Some fish species rely on this cover for protection before they grow and move to deeper reefs. I grew up on the Southern Oregon coast and didn't know much about the bull kelp we would frequently see on the beach. The Southern Oregon coast holds 92% of the state's bull kelp, but to see it in Nelscott Beach seems to me to be indicative of a healthy reef offshore Lincoln City.
