I feel like this challenge has recalibrated our universe.

This month has been very refreshing, it's been great learning about all the different ways and forms we can impact our planet. Significant changes have been made in my household since taking on this challenge. It's also been very encouraging to see everyone put a lot of effort into this. One of my colleagues planted a few trees, even though they were planted in the wrong season, it was very admirable to see.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Buildings
How can you share what you have learned in your research with others?

    Kenia Garcia's avatar
    Kenia Garcia 10/26/2023 11:14 AM
Lately, I've been sharing some of the links to the videos I've been watching here with my friends and family and it's been very informative for us. It's interesting to learn how different everything is in other states. Example: better water, options on bamboo products, recycling options, etc
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Electricity
Changing lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! What's next for you?

    Kenia Garcia's avatar
    Kenia Garcia 10/23/2023 10:54 AM
Wash my clothes in cold water if possible, during the evening, and not as frequent.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Electricity
Identify some ways in which modern human societies have become unsustainable. What kind of roles do individuals have in creating and changing practices in society?

    Kenia Garcia's avatar
    Kenia Garcia 10/23/2023 10:52 AM
I think the list here would be lengthy, but essentially, we take more from the land than we give and what we do take, is used so inefficiently that we give it back in forms that are harming the land instead of helping.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry
What concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.

    Kenia Garcia's avatar
    Kenia Garcia 10/20/2023 8:08 PM
Probably the rate of species going extinct and the quality of life children and future children will be forced to endure. It's very scary to imagine my son may not get to see leopards or gorillas, which I've recently learned are at the top of endangered species - or bee's, i love bees. That makes my heart really sad.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Clean air, clean water and healthy food are just three reasons to care about regenerative agriculture. What are some other reasons? How could/does regenerative agriculture positively impact you and your community?

    Kenia Garcia's avatar
    Kenia Garcia 10/20/2023 8:02 PM
Increase resilience to the climate crisis. Increase biodiversity, above and below the ground...more bugs, birds, and other species. It brings joy, and it's fun, to be able to work with the land and not against it. Opportunity to address social and economic inequities of "conventional farming."
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks
Are bamboo alternatives readily available in your community? If not, what are other sustainable alternatives?

    Kenia Garcia's avatar
    Kenia Garcia 10/19/2023 12:39 PM
They aren't. Surprisingly we don't have many alternatives either. NC only cares about their fried chicken.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry
What was the hardest item to reduce using or cut out that is plastic? Did you find a way to do it?

    Kenia Garcia's avatar
    Kenia Garcia 10/17/2023 2:54 PM
Water bottles. The water here in NC is not very clean and we had just moved to a new house, and I didn't trust the water here, so I started buying the Costco packs, trusting it would be better water. Guilty, not s a smart move. We just bought a water dispenser/jug/filter and it's changed my life.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks
How difficult or easy was it to change your diet?

    Kenia Garcia's avatar
    Kenia Garcia 10/17/2023 2:49 PM
Not difficult at all. I believe it was much needed. I was starting to gain a little weight and most of it was going straight to my ankles, which made it a little difficult to dance.
