I've learned so much during this Ecochallenge! One thing that hits me hard is the intersection between colonization and carbonation...how invaders seized and exploited lands and people. A modern relative of that is Green Gentrification. But it hasn't all been sad and negative! I'm much more educated about the practicalities of public transit--if the train is nearly empty and someone sits next to you, get up and move IMMEDIATELY!--and things like biomass, peatlands, biochar, silviopasture bioplastics disposals, and the characteristics of walkable cities.

But most of all I enjoyed reading the feeds and finding out what others are doing. Together we truly are making a difference!

Travel numbers for the past 16 days--
    • Miles I've traveled by car: 65
    • Miles I DIDN'T travel by car because I used public transit: 131
Yes, it took a little longer, but also I'm thinking of what I saved on gas, parking, and wear and tear on my car...not to mention the added benefit of not having to deal with crazy drivers. But the best part is knowing I avoided creating so many miles of fossil fuel emissions.

Kudos Mary! My friend Sue took a "white privileged" class on poverty - and the first thing was to park your car and use public transportation. The depth of impact and learning is something I give to y'all - and not sure I'll ever do. Many thanks for the clarification of why you do the late night trips as well. I have "audio describer' written in my many notes to learn more of.

Well, I guess I shouldn't be surprised. According to the Environmental Protection Agency's list of the top climate polluters in the US in 2022, four of the top 10 were in my state of Texas. Sigh. Here's the link to the source article if you want to know more:

Yay lentils! I didn't grow up eating lentils--I can't remember having them until I was an adult--but they've become one of my go-to foods to keep on hand in case I unexpectedly have to feed a large group. Lentils cook up quickly, have great nutritional value, and have a pleasant mild taste that combines well with lots of other foods. I like knowing I can easily simmer lentils, celery, peppers, onions, garlic, and tomatoes for a fast and tasty meal that's good for me, good for the planet, and suitable for almost all my friends, many of whom are vegan.

Sue, I totally agree with you about cauliflower roasted with olive and nutritional yeast! And I thought I hated Brussels sprouts, but I love them fixed that way.

      Hey Mary -
You talked about your use of nutritional yeast in one of my posts. Have you ever baked a head of cauliflower covered with olive oil and nutritional yeast? Delicious!!!!

If you like lentils, you should the Lebanese Majdra (rice and lentils) and Rishta (lentil soup with bread dough or wide egg noodles) recipes.

Well, recycling is mentioned at the top of national news today in the US, but not in a positive context: the gunman who killed at least 18 people in and around Lewiston, Maine, was found dead a few hours ago near a recycling center where he once worked. Prayers for the victims, their families and friends, and the devastated community.

I spent the better part of an hour in two different grocery stores this evening reading ingredient lists for candy so I don't hand out treats with palm oil on Halloween. I came home with five bags of Hershey's chocolate bars. Beware Kit Kat and Twix and many other popular products!

Illegal dumping, especially of contaminated materials, is a problem that disproportionately affects low income areas, and usually the criminals get away with it unless you catch them in the act. However, the authorities in Smith County in northeast Texas were able to track a dumper down using technology! They found a bar code on one of the dumped items and used it to identify the person whose credit card was on file as having paid for the item. That man told the authorities that he'd hired someone "known to his family" to dispose of the stuff. When the police found that second man, his truck was full of materials they suspect he was about to dump. Good job, Smith County law enforcement!

In the past 12 days I've used public transit for 4 round trips (including my 3 longest trips) and the car only twice. My city is offering free public transit for early voting, so my housemate and I took the bus for the three-mile trip to the nearest polling place. There was some walking involved, and we got a little damp in a sudden shower before we managed to get to a covered bus stop. Adding it up, it looks like I saved 82 miles of driving by using public transit.

82 pounds of C02 as well and more. 1 mile generally equals 1# of carbon. No more late night stories though please Mary!

What concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.

    Mary Hanks's avatar
    Mary Hanks 10/25/2023 3:24 PM
What concerns me the most about how we are affecting the planet is actually the almost total LACK of concern I see on the part of folks who should know better--by which I mean intelligent, educated people with the time and means to take action. Are they all being climate-conscious? NO!!! So many of them are drinking their K-cup single-use plastic brewed coffee and chowing down on a big steak while laughing at the idea of promoting carpooling or cutting down on recreational air travel. They won't consider doing things like picking up trash in the neighborhood and sorting out the recyclables--or repairing shoes and shirts to extend their use--or walking nearby errands--or not buying avocados because their agriculture requires so much water. They're smug and comfortable in their privileged lives. That's the local level. Then, their nonchalance means they don't vote for leaders who'll fight for sustainability...and then we see nations breaking promises to control greenhouse gases, failing to support needy nations in their climate-oriented efforts, neglecting to consider the value of indigenous agricultural practices, and more.

Well, I love my planet more than I love avocados or brand new clothes. And if you're reading this, you almost certainly feel the same way. Somehow we have got to get through to people. I think the best way is to lead by example...which, if you're reading this, is exactly what you're already doing! Thank you for caring about the big picture. When I feel disheartened by those climate-indifferent non-composting nincompoops who are fiddling their thermostats down to 65 (degrees Fahrenheit) while Earth burns, I think of the thousands of people across the globe working the Drawdown Ecochallenge and making such a huge difference. Fellow Ecochallengers, you give me hope! Together, by the testament of our actions, we can motivate change in others.

Okay, rant over. :) But seriously, I do think that regularly using a K-cup might mean the consumer is an A-hole...at least where the planet is concerned.

Today I test-drove electric bikes, both two-wheeled and three-wheeled. The products were comfortable, and I think I could master the controls fairly easily. Some of the bikes were a bit heavy, but I was able to lift them for short periods of time. My main concern is security: where to park the bike when I'm at an activity for several hours. Weather is also an obstacle. This year there were five and a half months when health concerns prevented me from almost any kind of serious exertion outside. With climate change, I expect future summers to be brutal as well. Electric bikes are an option, but I'm not certain they're the best option for me in my current southern coastal city. But hey! Riding those bikes was FUN! I recommend checking them out!
