  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Electricity
Geothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. In what ways (i.e. with money, time, advocacy) can you invest in geothermal energy?

Investing in geothermal energy is something that can be approached through many different angles like money, time, and advocacy. Personally, I plan to invest in geothermal energy through advocating. I plan to advertise the benefits and spread awareness to my friends, sorority sisters, and family. In doing so, I can expand the amount of people who know of geothermal energy, and possible raise the investment rates and expansion overall.

    Buildings
Cities and towns need to plan for climate change. How can your city or town make its climate action plans equitable and socially just?

Equitable by definition says "fair and impartial." Socially Just, by definition, means "justice in terms of the distribution of wealth, opportunities, and privileges within a society." When combating problems like climate change it is important to consider factors like these for a true solution. An example of an all encompassing solution could possibly look like finding something that benefits individuals of all demographics and socioeconomic backgrounds. Not just individuals of wealth or one race in specific.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation
What have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?

Since I live on campus, every day I get to walk through the different buildings and infrastructure as I am going to my classes. It is a really good energy and mood boost to get some fresh air by moving my body. I have noticed that my walks are a lot more enjoyable when the walking paths are straight and not long and curvy. Although this may look more aesthetically pleasing, it feels a lot less direct when Im trying to get to my end point in a timely manner.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health and Education
What are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?

After reading from a Harvard article I found many interesting points and quotes as to some barriers holding back women from leadership roles in society. In the text it states, "Organizations inadvertently undermine this process when they advise women to proactively seek leadership roles without also addressing policies and practices that communicate a mismatch between how women are seen and the qualities and experiences people tend to associate with leaders. A significant body of research shows that for women, the subtle gender bias that persists in organizations and in society disrupts the learning cycle at the heart of becoming a leader." (Ibarra, 2013).

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry
Concrete is a good example of a material that most of us encounter every day, but its carbon footprint may not be obvious. What other everyday materials might have a large carbon footprint? How can you find out more?

    Sophie Harrod's avatar
    Sophie Harrod 10/03/2023 6:52 AM
There are everyday materials all around us with large carbon footprints. Some include: Ovens, hot showers, washing machines, etc. It is so easy to find out more about these products and others with carbon footprints. By simply googling and looking into these products you can go down a rabbit hole of finding out more information to building a sustainable future.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?

    Sophie Harrod's avatar
    Sophie Harrod 10/03/2023 6:38 AM
People in richer countries tend to eat more meat because they have the excess spending money to obtain these more luxury end goods that not all demographics have the money or access to. Eating more meat emits carbon green house emissions thus effecting our planet and the people that inhabit it.
