  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health and Education Research Barriers to Participation and Representation
What are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?

    Anandavelu K's avatar
    Anandavelu K 10/31/2023 7:01 AM
In both private and public spheres, women face occupational segregation, and multiple barriers such as lack of access to land, capital, financial resources and technology, as well as gender-based violence due to cultural mindsets and stereotypes.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Transportation Research and Consider Switching to a Hybrid or Electric Vehicle
Reducing (or eliminating) exhaust emissions and improving public health are two benefits of green vehicles. What other motivators inspire you to consider switching to a more fuel-efficient vehicle?

    Anandavelu K's avatar
    Anandavelu K 10/31/2023 6:57 AM
Fuel-efficient vehicles are defined as vehicles that have achieved a minimum green score of 40 on the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy (ACEEE) annual vehicle rating guide. The list of qualifying vehicles can be found on GreenerCars.org.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Purchase a Carbon Offset
A round-trip flight from New York City to Los Angeles emits just over 1.5 tons of CO2—per person. That’s a lot of carbon! What can you do to reduce the number of flights you take per year?

    Anandavelu K's avatar
    Anandavelu K 10/31/2023 6:52 AM
Taking off and landing burns more jet fuel than simply cruising at altitude. You can reduce your carbon footprint by avoiding multiple stops and plane changes on your journey. You will also reduce the wear and tear of travel on you.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants
Name some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?

    Anandavelu K's avatar
    Anandavelu K 10/31/2023 6:47 AM
Our water resources face a host of serious threats, all of which are caused primarily by human activity. They include sedimentation, pollution, climate change, deforestation, landscape changes, and urban growth. Flushing. Run cold water taps for two minutes before using water for drinking and cooking.
Cold Water Use. Do not use hot tap water for drinking and cooking.
Water Filters. Routinely replace filter cartridges.

Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Composting

    Freeze it:
If you’re not sure you’ll eat something before it goes bad, freeze it. You’ll be so thankful when you find that chili in the freezer on a night you don’t have a plan for dinner. Almost anything can be frozen—seriously anything, even milk, which I sometimes freeze if we are headed out of town (it’s not as delicious defrosted, but it is just fine for baking). Pre-vacay I’ll also all kinds of things that won’t last until we get back.
