REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustryGood job on choosing recycled paper! How can you take your action a step further?
Kennedy Klumker 10/09/2023 1:28 PMI can take my action a step further by choosing to use more products that are ethically sourced and made out of recycled materials. I could use bags and containers used out of recycled material, as well as water bottles and even furniture. Another way to take this action further is to be selective when I use the recycled paper. With modern technology, it is progressively becoming easier to take notes and do homework online, saving paper. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and EducationWhich businesses that you researched are you excited to support? Are you already supporting businesses that you didn't know were owned by women, people of color, or immigrants?
Kennedy Klumker 10/09/2023 1:24 PMUpon researching businesses, I found many that I am excited to support. One that was of particular excitement is Made By KWest which is a black owned jewelry and accessory shop. Another business that I look forward to supporting is Forager Vintage which is a vintage store in Portland. One black owned company that I discovered I am supporting is Alaffia. I buy their hair and beauty products. The owner, Olowo-n'djo Tchala, was born in a small village in Togo, West Africa. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildingsHow does city planning and design relate to equity and climate change?
Kennedy Klumker 10/09/2023 1:09 PMCity planning directly relates to equity and climate change because historically, there have been racist practices of redlining that have resulted in environmental injustice. Redlining began in the early 1900s when city planners outlined particular neighborhoods to systematically deny financial services to people of color. Black communities have since had lower property values, leading to industrialization in these neighborhoods. The added industrialism has resulted in a significant amount of pollution, harming the health and well-being of these communities. The impact of redlining can still be seen today, as people of color are more likely to live in hotter neighborhoods, leaving them more susceptible to harmful health issues. One source even claims that black communities across the United States were the most negatively impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic because of environmental racism. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Kennedy Klumker 10/09/2023 12:48 PMMy daily walks have mainly been through the OSU campus. I have noticed many other students choosing to commute either on foot or on a bike. I really enjoyed the greenery and fall trees on my walks to class. On campus, there are many crosswalks that are often very busy in between class periods. More crossing pathways could be a solution to this problem. Another potential solution could be a stronger separation of pedestrian areas and roads for cars. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustryWhat are some more "Rs" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?
Kennedy Klumker 10/09/2023 12:44 PMOne “R” I could add to my daily practice is replace. Replacing household items with intention could significantly reduce my waste. For example, I could replace plastic bags with reusable bags. Another “R” I could add to my daily practice is rehearse. Rehearsing a sustainable routine and choosing good habits is key to making an impact.
