Olivia 's actions
Electricity
Calculate My Household Carbon Footprint
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how different lifestyle choices could reduce our carbon footprint and our impact on the environment.
Buildings
Fix Leaky Faucets
Low-Flow Fixtures
I will fix faucets or report leaky faucets to facilities that have been wasting up to 9 gallons (34 L) of water a day or 270 (1,020 L) gallons of water a month per faucet.
Transportation
Go for a Daily Walk
Walkable Cities
I will take a walk for 30 minutes each day and take note of the infrastructure that makes walking more or less enjoyable, accessible, and possible.
Land Sinks
Explore My Area
Sometimes protecting nature requires feeling connected to nature. I will invest 60 minutes in exploring and appreciating a natural area in my region, whether a forest, wetland, coastal area, or somewhere else.
Health and Education
Learn about the Need for Family Planning
Family Planning and Education
I will spend at least 10 minutes learning more about the need for family planning globally.
Industry
Practice the 5 Rs
Recycling
I will practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Cook With Seaweed
Seaweed Farming

REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered SinksWhat recipe did you make and how did it turn out? Will you cook with seaweed again?
Olivia LaForce 10/25/2023 4:30 PMI tried to make a sushi roll at home with dried seaweed. It turned out good, I wasn't very good at rolling the sushi together but the taste was nice. I will definitely try to make sushi again and other recipes with seaweed. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustryWhat are some more "Rs" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?
Olivia LaForce 10/11/2023 4:45 PMI would do better to repurpose, usually if something can't be reused I would either throw it away or recycle it. However, I feel like a lot of the things I throw away can be repurposed and used again. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and EducationWhat did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?
Olivia LaForce 10/09/2023 7:29 AMI learned that family planning addresses many issues, such as overpopulation, poverty alleviation, and sustainability. Family planning means different things for different people since people have differing cultural, social, economic, and political views. For example, a poor family who struggles to care for the family members that they already have would possibly want to engage in the family planning method of contraception. On the other hand, an individual who is living in a rural area may not have access to family planning methods. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand SinksHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?
Olivia LaForce 10/05/2023 6:28 AMDoing so can make you realize the beauty of the world around you and what your city really has to offer. How can you know/appreciate what is out there if you don’t go see it? -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildingsWhat are other easy and low-cost ways to reduce your water usage at home?
Olivia LaForce 10/03/2023 7:24 AMTake shorter showers, buy a low flow shower head, don’t leave the sink running when brushing teeth/shaving, and run the dishwasher only when it is full -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Olivia LaForce 10/03/2023 7:05 AMI have noticed the amount of traffic that Lexington has. While I am well aware of the horrible traffic when trying to drive around Lexington at any time of day, walking really changed my perspective on it. When you aren’t driving and actually keeping up with the cars on the road, it is easy to be ignorant to how many cars are on the road with you. When walking it is much more apparent how many cars pass you and share the road. I have really enjoyed being outside and enjoying the weather before the colder months hit. One of my least favorite things about driving/walking in Lexington is the timing of the traffic lights and the pedestrian lights. It seems like the lights are timed horribly, causing more traffic for both cars and pedestrians. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricityAfter you determined your carbon footprint, did you see what different choices you can make in order to reduce it?
Olivia LaForce 10/03/2023 6:59 AMWhen calculating my household’s footprint, answering the question relating to meat in our diets made it shoot up. In my house, we have a total of 5 people, 3 of those people regularly eat people and 2 eat meat just not as often. Making a change in our diets, even something as simple as limiting the amount of meat that we eat a week can have a huge impact on carbon footprints.
