Jade's actions
Industry
Practice the 5 Rs
Recycling
I will practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
Industry
Find a Local Climate-Friendly Supermarket
Refrigerant Management
I will explore the interactive map in the links below to find a supermarket that does not use HFC refrigerants near my home.
Buildings
Online Energy Audit
Multiple Solutions
I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Health and Education
Watch Drawdown's Climate Solutions 101 Series
Family Planning and Education
I will watch Drawdown’s Climate Solutions 101 and share what I learned with others.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Reduce Food Waste
Reduced Food Waste
I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during Drawdown Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.
Electricity
Calculate My Household Carbon Footprint
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how different lifestyle choices could reduce our carbon footprint and our impact on the environment.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Reduce Animal Products
Plant-Rich Diets
I will enjoy 2 meatless or vegan meals each day of the challenge.
Transportation
Test Drive an Electric Bike
Electric Bicycles
I will test drive an electric bike at a local distributor to see if it makes sense to use one in place of my car, or to extend the area I can cover by bike.

REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricityAfter you determined your carbon footprint, did you see what different choices you can make in order to reduce it?
Jade Menchaca 10/24/2023 12:07 PMI am always trying to eat less meat and take public transportation more. It's hard for me to cut out meat and driving my car fully, but I'm working towards doing both less and less. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustryHow close is the nearest climate-friendly supermarket to your home? How could you encourage local supermarket to reduce or phase out their use of HFC refrigerants?
Jade Menchaca 10/17/2023 1:56 PMThere is only one grocery store within 20 miles of my house that had a green signifying which meant climate friendly. I was shocked because living in Portland, you'd think there would be way more! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land UseAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?
Jade Menchaca 10/03/2023 12:07 PMI create a meal plan and grocery list each week and am pretty good about sticking to it. If I ever had veggies or leftovers that are about to go bad I freeze them or try and give it to someone I know will eat it that day. Over the first few days of logging this I really haven't thrown out any food other than a mysterious food (I think a 1-2 year old banana) from my freezer. With food being so expensive now, that is one of my main reasons for not wasting it. I would rather save that money for a vacation! -
