Amy's actions
Transportation
Purchase a Carbon Offset
Efficient Aviation
If I buy a plane ticket, I will purchase a carbon offset.
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Learn about Biochar
Biochar Production
I will spend 30 minutes learning about biochar and how it can help sequester carbon.
Electricity
Learn More about Wave and Tidal Energy
Ocean Power
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of wave and tidal energy.
Electricity
Learn More About Geothermal Energy
Geothermal Power
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of geothermal energy and consider investing in this technology.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Reduce Food Waste
Reduced Food Waste
I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during Drawdown Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.
Industry
Learn about Carbon Offsets
I will spend 30 minutes learning about carbon offsets, and why they are a necessary solution in combating a climate crisis.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Tend A Garden
Conservation Agriculture
I will tend to a garden, or prepare for one, each day using sustainable gardening practices.
Industry
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Bioplastics; Reduced Plastics
I will avoid buying and using 1 single-use plastics and instead replace them with durable options.
Land Sinks
Local Perennial Biomass
Perennial Biomass Production
I will spend at least 30 minutes finding out if anyone is working on perennial biomass projects in my region and how I can get involved.
Land Sinks
Buy Bamboo
Bamboo Production
When they are available, I will purchase products made from bamboo instead of wood, plastic, or metal.
Transportation
Go for a Daily Walk
Walkable Cities
I will take a walk for 15 minutes each day and take note of the infrastructure that makes walking more or less enjoyable, accessible, and possible.
Electricity
Calculate My Household Carbon Footprint
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how different lifestyle choices could reduce our carbon footprint and our impact on the environment.
Health and Education
Research Barriers to Participation and Representation
Family Planning and Education
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning more about the barriers to women's equal participation and representation around the world.
Buildings
Plan to Insulate
Insulation
I will spend 30 minutes finding out how to make my home more energy efficient through better insulation and weatherization.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildingsWhat are some of the benefits of making your home more energy efficient?
Amy Merrill 10/30/2023 5:11 AMOne of the biggest benefits is cost savings to heat our home during the winter. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and EducationWhat are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?
Amy Merrill 10/30/2023 5:10 AMOne of the barriers to women's equality in my area is employment and earnings, this closely correlates to another barrier regarding the health and well-being of women due to lack of financial security. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustryWhat are some attributes of an offset that you should consider before purchasing them?
Amy Merrill 10/30/2023 4:55 AMSome of the things to look for when purchasing carbon offsets is that the project is actually real. That the offset is verifiable and enforceable by a third party. You will also want to make sure that the offset is permanent - you don't want the land owner to be able to burn the trees down 6 months later. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricityAfter you determined your carbon footprint, did you see what different choices you can make in order to reduce it?
Amy Merrill 10/30/2023 4:48 AMI can definitely see things I can do to reduce my carbon footprint, unfortunately due to where I live I am unable to change some of the larger impacts, like switching to an electric car. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationA round-trip flight from New York City to Los Angeles emits just over 1.5 tons of CO2—per person. That’s a lot of carbon! What can you do to reduce the number of flights you take per year?
Amy Merrill 10/17/2023 9:37 AMI don't travel much, especially by air. I am taking a trip in a couple weeks for a wedding, to purchase carbon offsets for my round-trip airfare is only about $8.00. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand SinksAre bamboo alternatives readily available in your community? If not, what are other sustainable alternatives?
Amy Merrill 10/17/2023 7:10 AMI have looked into purchasing bamboo alternatives for items around my house thru Amazon. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricityGeothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. In what ways (i.e. with money, time, advocacy) can you invest in geothermal energy?
Amy Merrill 10/17/2023 7:08 AMPersonally I could invest in geothermal energy through advocacy, where I currently live would prohibit me from investing time or money into potentially converting to it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered SinksCan biochar provide additional benefits besides sequestering carbon?
Amy Merrill 10/13/2023 7:09 AMBiochar can improve the water retention in soil and can also increase the nutrient retention in the soil. Both of these things can boost the crop yield. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricityWhat did you learn about wave and tidal energy? How do they compare to other energy sources?
Amy Merrill 10/13/2023 7:04 AMWave and tidal energy is still relatively new. While this energy source is renewable, it is not as cost effective as other forms of renewable energy.
