Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Buildings
What are some of the benefits of making your home more energy efficient?

    Amy Merrill's avatar
    Amy Merrill 10/30/2023 5:11 AM
One of the biggest benefits is cost savings to heat our home during the winter.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health and Education
What are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?

    Amy Merrill's avatar
    Amy Merrill 10/30/2023 5:10 AM
One of the barriers to women's equality in my area is employment and earnings, this closely correlates to another barrier regarding the health and well-being of women due to lack of financial security.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry
What are some attributes of an offset that you should consider before purchasing them?

    Amy Merrill's avatar
    Amy Merrill 10/30/2023 4:55 AM
Some of the things to look for when purchasing carbon offsets is that the project is actually real. That the offset is verifiable and enforceable by a third party. You will also want to make sure that the offset is permanent - you don't want the land owner to be able to burn the trees down 6 months later.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Electricity
After you determined your carbon footprint, did you see what different choices you can make in order to reduce it?

    Amy Merrill's avatar
    Amy Merrill 10/30/2023 4:48 AM
I can definitely see things I can do to reduce my carbon footprint, unfortunately due to where I live I am unable to change some of the larger impacts, like switching to an electric car.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation
A round-trip flight from New York City to Los Angeles emits just over 1.5 tons of CO2—per person. That’s a lot of carbon! What can you do to reduce the number of flights you take per year?

    Amy Merrill's avatar
    Amy Merrill 10/17/2023 9:37 AM
I don't travel much, especially by air. I am taking a trip in a couple weeks for a wedding, to purchase carbon offsets for my round-trip airfare is only about $8.00.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks
Are bamboo alternatives readily available in your community? If not, what are other sustainable alternatives?

    Amy Merrill's avatar
    Amy Merrill 10/17/2023 7:10 AM
I have looked into purchasing bamboo alternatives for items around my house thru Amazon.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Electricity
Geothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. In what ways (i.e. with money, time, advocacy) can you invest in geothermal energy?

    Amy Merrill's avatar
    Amy Merrill 10/17/2023 7:08 AM
Personally I could invest in geothermal energy through advocacy, where I currently live would prohibit me from investing time or money into potentially converting to it.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Can biochar provide additional benefits besides sequestering carbon?

    Amy Merrill's avatar
    Amy Merrill 10/13/2023 7:09 AM
Biochar can improve the water retention in soil and can also increase the nutrient retention in the soil. Both of these things can boost the crop yield.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Electricity
What did you learn about wave and tidal energy? How do they compare to other energy sources?

    Amy Merrill's avatar
    Amy Merrill 10/13/2023 7:04 AM
Wave and tidal energy is still relatively new. While this energy source is renewable, it is not as cost effective as other forms of renewable energy.
