Industry

Green My Job

Industry

Using Drawdown's Job Function Action Guide, I will learn about climate actions I can take at work.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Transportation

Go for a Daily Walk

Walkable Cities

I will take a walk for 30 minutes each day and take note of the infrastructure that makes walking more or less enjoyable, accessible, and possible.

COMPLETED 24
DAILY ACTIONS

Industry

Practice the 5 Rs

Recycling

I will practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Food, Agriculture, and Land Use

Eat plant-based!

As a team goal, we would like to encourage everyone to try at least one plant-based dinner a week.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Transportation

Be more sustainable with our commute

As a team goal, we would like to challenge everyone to try a lower carbon footprint alternative way to commute to work at least once a week. Consider public transit, cycling or carpooling! Did you know? UBC carpool drivers can earn up to $2 per day on their UBCcard if they use the Liftango app and pick-up at least one person on their way to and from campus. Link below.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Transportation

Purchase a Carbon Offset

Efficient Aviation

If I buy a plane ticket, I will purchase a carbon offset.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land Sinks

Buy Bamboo

Bamboo Production

When they are available, I will purchase products made from bamboo instead of wood, plastic, or metal.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Food, Agriculture, and Land Use

Smaller Portions

Reduced Food Waste

I will use smaller plates and/or serve smaller portions when dishing out food.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Land Sinks

Forest-Friendly Foods 2

Tropical Forest Restoration

I will replace or remove the palm oil, coffee, and cocoa products in my current diet that are known to contribute to deforestation.

COMPLETED 24
DAILY ACTIONS

Food, Agriculture, and Land Use

Eat Mindfully

Reduced Food Waste

I will eat all of my meals without distractions, e.g., phone, computer, TV, or newspaper.

COMPLETED 28
DAILY ACTIONS

Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks

Smart Seafood Choices

Ocean Farming

I will visit seafoodwatch.org and download the app to commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks

Visit the Coast

Macroalgae Protection and Restoration

I will visit a coastal or ocean site to experience the ecosystem and look for the presence of macroalgae/seaweed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Electricity

Calculate My Household Carbon Footprint

I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how different lifestyle choices could reduce our carbon footprint and our impact on the environment.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Electricity

Learn More about Biomass

Biomass Power

I will spend at least 45 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of biomass.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Electricity
Had you ever heard of biomass technology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share your new knowledge with your friends!

We have a great facility here on campus: the Bioenergy Research Demonstration Facility! https://energy.ubc.ca/ubcs-utility-infrastructure/brdf/
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Electricity
After you determined your carbon footprint, did you see what different choices you can make in order to reduce it?

I was shocked to learn that my 3-person family probably contributes ~4.0 tons (TONS!) of carbon monthly! Phew, we have some work to do.

Many states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?

The Seafood Watch app has been discontinued, but the website has guides that are very easy to use! I focused on reading about the "Avoid" species, and it saddened me to learn there are so many. I was relieved to see that when we buy seafood for consumption at home, we have pretty good choices and have been doing OK, but I will definitely check the website the next time I'm shopping for fish.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry
What actions will you take to green your job?

I read the Job Function Action Guide for marketing, and I realized something I had never thought of before when I read, "Use climate-friendly imagery and characters in your advertising (e.g., bikes, mass transit, plant-based meals, etc.)": that marketing has a role to play in normalizing climate responsibility! I have been focused on EDI and representation in marketing communications, but this was the first time that I realized climate can be supported this way, too. Cool!

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks
How difficult or easy was it to change your diet?

It's easier and easier to find better alternatives that taste every bit as good as what we used to use! Cost used to be a consideration, but now groceries are expensive, period, so the difference doesn't seem to be as great.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation
What have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?

I have lots of forest trails near my house, and I'm loving the changing colours and falling leaves!
