REFLECTION QUESTIONLand SinksAs you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?
Berkeley Newsom 10/31/2023 11:26 AMAs I learn more about the seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, I think more and more that the actions that we make, really have an impact, and we need to make sure that we are making good impacts. The statistics show that we are really not doing well, and that there is SO MUCH that we need to do to save our planet, which is very overwhelming. But there are still a lot of people that are really trying to make an impact, and although it is slow, it gives me some hope. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand SinksMuch of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?
Berkeley Newsom 10/31/2023 11:15 AMI can make a choice to not use palm oil, or anything that is made by draining peatlands and Instead I can use alternatives. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand SinksHad you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?
Berkeley Newsom 10/31/2023 11:05 AMI only had heard about it from exploring the Ecochallenge website, so I looked it up and read some things about it. After learning about it, I think the biggest advantage of silvopasture is that the cows get higher nutrients, and are very happy because all of the stress caused by heat is taken away by shade. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and EducationWhich businesses that you researched are you excited to support? Are you already supporting businesses that you didn't know were owned by women, people of color, or immigrants?
Berkeley Newsom 10/31/2023 10:48 AMI supported little changos, a little arepa restaurant owned by my mom's friend who is a woman of color. To support it, we have been eating there often, and posting on social media about it. Some places that me or my family already support that I did not know were owned by women, people of color, or migrants, include: Gingers revenge, Small cakes, and a couple more. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand SinksHow is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?
Berkeley Newsom 10/31/2023 10:18 AMI planted little tiny mini trees, it is good for my mental physical, and spiritual health, because I got to spend time outside and enjoy nature, which always makes me happier, and seeing the trees grow if they do will be a cool experience. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land UseProducing food that goes uneaten squanders many resources—seeds, water, energy, land, fertilizer, hours of labor, financial capital. Which of these kinds of waste most motivates you to change your behavior regarding food waste? Why?
Berkeley Newsom 10/31/2023 9:42 AMI think hours of labor motivates me most to change my behavior regarding food waste, because that means people are working very hard, and sometimes in very bad conditions. So by not wasting food, that means that there is less labor, and the labor that is done isn't wasted -
