Industry
Practice the 5 Rs
Recycling
I will practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
Electricity
Calculate My Household Carbon Footprint
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how different lifestyle choices could reduce our carbon footprint and our impact on the environment.
Electricity
Choose Renewable Energy or Purchase Renewable Energy Credits
Onshore Wind Turbines, Utility-Scale Solar Photovoltaics
I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will purchase Renewable Energy Credits to match my usage.

Plastics Audit
Reduced Plastics
I will complete a plastics audit to see where plastics show up in my life and determine how I can reduce the use of single-use plastics.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Learn About Cattle Farming

Susan Quintenz 10/31/2023 5:34 PMPrior to our latest round trip drive to Washington, DC, I took my hybrid to the dealer and had my tire pressure checked, and subsequently, my tires inflated. Turns out I had one of the highest miles per gallon - 40 - in mountainous conditions. The morale of the story: check your tire pressure before a long driving trip. Properly inflated tires help maximize gas efficiency. -
Susan Quintenz 10/29/2023 4:56 PMThe Great Pumpkins Arrive at Jeffrey Mansion tomorrow. Two pick-up truck loads of pumpkins, gourds and squash will be re-purposed from the Franklin Park Conservatory's "Pumpkins Aglow" to the Mansion. The Bexley Bloomers will use the pumpkins to decorate the urns, entries and special nooks with these secondhand pumpkins. Thanks to Elizabeth's help last year, at the end of November, we were able to dispose of these orange icons in an environmentally friendly way. No more dumping the October/November decor in the Jeffrey Mansion forest. A Win-Win-Win. Thanks to FPC, Bloomers and Elizabeth! -
Susan Quintenz 10/29/2023 12:17 PMWe still have hardcopies of newspapers delivered. The Sunday comics always are good for a laugh. However, they also make excellent wrapping paper for gifts for any holiday and occasion. The bright colors and oversize sheets create a festive looking gift. Plus, the recipient always starts to read one of the comic strips before ripping off the paper. A terrific way to recycle newsprint -- twice.-

Susan Quintenz 10/22/2023 5:19 PMGeorgetown charges 5 cent per plastic bag whether in a grocery store, apparel shop, or restaurant. When shopping there this weekend, I chose not to buy a plastic bag for the several apparel items I had purchased. Therefore, I was carrying a bundle of clothes in my arms while walking "M Street" with tags streaming from the clothes. As I came to the intersection of "M" and Wisconsin, I ran into Bexley residents -- and a Bexley Bloomer -- who were also visiting DC for the weekend. Mercifully, they did not ask me why I was carrying clothes in my arms which sported tags and price tags.-

Susan Quintenz 10/22/2023 5:14 PMWhen we travel, we take our own toiletries -- shampoo, body lotion, soap, shower gel, creams and slippers. Then we are not tempted to use all those little bottles of things which are thrown away if not consumed and whose contents aren't voluminous offer no longer term "enhancements." -
Susan Quintenz 10/22/2023 5:04 PMWhen traveling, I/we bring our recycling home with us. Might be plastic bags from hotels; playbills; cardboard; newspapers; glass bottles from hotel sundries. Easy to tuck these items into the corners of a suitcase or carry-on. -
Susan Quintenz 10/14/2023 9:11 AMThe Bexley Bloomers, a volunteer gardening group based at Jeffrey Mansion, collected more than two dozen unused glass vases from our members. These vases will be re-purposed to "Petals of Inspiration" for use in training programs. "Petals of Inspiration" is a social enterprise which offers a Transitional Workforce Development program for young adults overcoming barriers to employment with a focus on job skill training - like flower arranging -and future paid employment opportunities. -
Susan Quintenz 10/13/2023 3:19 PMLike most Bexley homes, our basement is damp - even with two sump pumps. Therefore, we also have two dehumidifiers which offer us two plus gallons of water every 16 hours. Instead of dumping the water down the laundry room drain, (which would be oh, so easy!) we pour the water into large buckets and hike up the stairs to use the water in our garden beds, the bird path and even the steam iron. -
Susan Quintenz 10/11/2023 5:31 PMMy printer didn't work today so while I could not print paper agendas, we were able to post online. Paper saved; agenda saved; trees saved. A multitude of savings.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustryWhat are some more "Rs" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?
Susan Quintenz 10/11/2023 5:29 PMOur twin sons wash all their dark and light clothes together. While reducing water, detergent and drying, doesn't that make all the clothes look grungy? Tonight, I combined two small loads into one big one -- hiking pants with blouses. If someone notices my colors aren't as vibrant, I will let you know.
