Emily's actions
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Reduce Food Waste
Reduced Food Waste
I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during Drawdown Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Eat Mindfully
Reduced Food Waste
I will eat all of my meals without distractions, e.g., phone, computer, TV, or newspaper.
Electricity
Calculate My Household Carbon Footprint
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how different lifestyle choices could reduce our carbon footprint and our impact on the environment.
Buildings
Online Energy Audit
Multiple Solutions
I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Land Sinks
Explore My Area
Sometimes protecting nature requires feeling connected to nature. I will invest 60 minutes in exploring and appreciating a natural area in my region, whether a forest, wetland, coastal area, or somewhere else.
Buildings
Research Heat Pumps
High-Efficiency Heat Pumps
I will spend at least 15 minutes researching heat pumps to see if installing one makes sense for my home/building.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricityAfter you determined your carbon footprint, did you see what different choices you can make in order to reduce it?
Emily Radomski 10/10/2023 5:00 PMHonestly I found the linked carbon footprint calculator to be very unhelpful. It only very generally asked about a couple of things (car travel, air travel, whether you eat meat or not). There are so many more things that go into your carbon footprint so I don't think it was very accurate. I remember doing a water footprint calculator for a previous EcoChallenge & it was much more thorough. -
Emily Radomski 10/09/2023 4:32 PMOne daily action I selected was to eat meals mindfully without distractions. I'm struggling with this one! I often don't wake up early enough to have breakfast before work, so I usually have it in front of my computer. And at lunch I have a habit of scrolling or playing a game to zone out & take a mental break. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand SinksHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?
Emily Radomski 10/09/2023 4:27 PMSpending more time outdoors enhances your sense of place because you get familiar with the particular plants and animals in your local area. Maybe you learn to recognize bird songs, or observe how your favorite neighborhood tree changes as it goes through the seasons. That kind of long-term familiarity makes you feel like part of the natural community. -
Emily Radomski 10/04/2023 4:12 PMI'm definitely guilty of letting food go bad before I eat it, especially vegetables. I buy them optimistically and then reach for 'easier' snacks instead. I'm finding out that it's better for me to just not buy the processed, 'easy' foods, then I am forced to eat the veggies instead.-
Mary Hanks 10/04/2023 4:40 PMIn today's busy world, there's not always time to stay on top of things like how long vegetables have been on the refrigerator shelf. I think you're smart to intentionally limit your options!
