  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks
Climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe states that "The reason we care about climate change is because it affects the people and places that we care about." What is happening (or will happen) in your area that will affect the people and places you care about?

One climate disaster that can become devasating as severe rain begins to become more commonplace could be the overflow and flooding of the Susquehanna River and the surrounding community.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks
Are bamboo alternatives readily available in your community? If not, what are other sustainable alternatives?

    Noelle Schwartz's avatar
    Noelle Schwartz 10/30/2023 12:01 PM
Target has dedicated their stores to choosing bamboo and recycled materials for their paper products by 2050 which should help to make more sustainable decisions easier to make for the average person!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

    Noelle Schwartz's avatar
    Noelle Schwartz 10/30/2023 12:00 PM
Making conscious decisions about what clothing articles I buy while also making sure they will fit into my everyday style so that I will get the ost use out of it.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Noelle Schwartz's avatar
    Noelle Schwartz 10/30/2023 11:59 AM
This helps me to make better decisions around the waste in my kitchen and how it can be discarded versus when it must be discarded.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Clean air, clean water and healthy food are just three reasons to care about regenerative agriculture. What are some other reasons? How could/does regenerative agriculture positively impact you and your community?

    Noelle Schwartz's avatar
    Noelle Schwartz 10/30/2023 11:57 AM
Regenerative agriculture have positive impacts for the farmers using it as well. Not only are they saving gas, time, and energy, they also get cost cuts due to the lowered cost of regenerative farming practices.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Buildings
What are some of the benefits of making your home more energy efficient?

    Noelle Schwartz's avatar
    Noelle Schwartz 10/30/2023 11:54 AM
Making your home more energy efficient can help to reduce electric and gas bills to heat or cool your home. There even are funds in Pennsylvania to help homeowners to seal their windows, doors, and frames, to help them become more efficient!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Buildings
How does improving your home's (or office's) energy efficiency help you better live out your values?

    Noelle Schwartz's avatar
    Noelle Schwartz 10/30/2023 11:52 AM
Simply buying a roll of weather stripping (~ $5) I was able to prevent drafts in my space and save energy that would have been needlessly wasted with the heating or cooling units in the building.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?

    Noelle Schwartz's avatar
    Noelle Schwartz 10/30/2023 11:37 AM
I would rather use that 1.5k to make conscious decisions about reusable and long-life clothing, tools, and appliances.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

    Noelle Schwartz's avatar
    Noelle Schwartz 10/30/2023 11:36 AM
Reducing waste in the kitchen is one of my favorite things to do since you can be so creative with your food. I recently made cilantro out of carrot tops after making a vegetable soup! You can also dry onion peels in an oven or air fryer to blend into an easy onion powder.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks
What are the multiple benefits of community gardens, including carbon sequestration? Why do these benefits matter to you?

    Noelle Schwartz's avatar
    Noelle Schwartz 10/30/2023 9:25 AM
Community gardens also provide green spaces in otherwise impermeable surfaces in towns and cities and can help to feed less fortunate populations in the same areas. These benefits have been shared with me for years, and I owe much of my success to the community gardens and green spaces in my childhood community.

I agree : community gardens can benefit the residents of large apartment blocks. As a gardener, I can attest to the positive value of time spent : gentle exercise, the joy of successfully growing, and sharing time with like-minded others.
