Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Reduce Food Waste
Reduced Food Waste
I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during Drawdown Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.
Land Sinks
Explore My Area
Sometimes protecting nature requires feeling connected to nature. I will invest 30 minutes in exploring and appreciating a natural area in my region, whether a forest, wetland, coastal area, or somewhere else.
Industry
Recycle Everything I Can
Recycling; Recycled Metals; Recycled Plastics
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, including electronics and metals.
Industry
Go Paperless
Recycled Paper
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions, and opting out of junk mail.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Smaller Portions
Reduced Food Waste
I will use smaller plates and/or serve smaller portions when dishing out food.
Electricity
electricity conservation
I will shut down my computer and all peripherals each evening at the close of my business day.

REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustryHow could you incorporate other "Rs" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "Rs" make you feel?
Sonja Struna 10/03/2023 5:01 AMBy trying to not always buy new and thinking about if you realy NEED something. It's a good way to save money and decrease waste which should make everyone feel good. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land UseAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land UseWhile dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?
Sonja Struna 10/03/2023 4:58 AMpreventing overeating, weight maintenance, and generally feeling better along with cost savings on food.-
Emily Katzin 10/04/2023 11:07 AMThis is so true! It took me a long time to realize that I often overeat at meals. I think growing up with two older brothers, thought I would be big and strong like them if I ate a lot. I think another part is convenience. I would mistakenly think that if I ate until I was full, then I wouldn't have to make/prep as many meals or snacks. This never works though! I always feel better when I have smaller portions of more of them throughout the day. I'm trying to split portions into two smaller meals so I don't have to cook more.
