Learn about Temperate Forests
Temperate Forest Restoration
I will spend at least 60 minutes learning more about the environmental services provided by and the environmental issues affecting temperate forests.
Land Sinks
Explore My Area
Sometimes protecting nature requires feeling connected to nature. I will invest 60 minutes in exploring and appreciating a natural area in my region, whether a forest, wetland, coastal area, or somewhere else.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Talk With a Local Grocer
Improved Fisheries
I will ask my local seafood market or grocery store if their seafood is sustainable and share the Seafood Watch resources so they can stock sustainable options.
Land Sinks
Research Peatlands
Peatland Protection and Rewetting
I will spend 60 minutes researching the environmental benefits of peatlands and what is being done around the world to conserve and restore them.
Land Sinks
Learn More about Silvopasture
Silvopasture
I will spend at least 30 minutes watching videos and/or reading about the environmental benefits of silvopasture.
Land Sinks
Local Perennial Biomass
Perennial Biomass Production
I will spend at least 30 minutes finding out if anyone is working on perennial biomass projects in my region and how I can get involved.
Electricity
Learn More about Micro Wind
Micro Wind Turbines
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of micro wind.
Transportation
Go for a Daily Walk
Walkable Cities
I will take a walk for 60 minutes each day and take note of the infrastructure that makes walking more or less enjoyable, accessible, and possible.
Buildings
Learn about 'Green Gentrification'
Multiple Solutions
I will spend at least 15 minutes learning about green gentrification and how it relates to city planning for climate action.
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Cook With Seaweed
Seaweed Farming
I will use seaweed in a new recipe.
Industry
Practice the 5 Rs
Recycling
I will practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand SinksClimate scientist Katharine Hayhoe states that "The reason we care about climate change is because it affects the people and places that we care about." What is happening (or will happen) in your area that will affect the people and places you care about?
Adam Sysol 10/11/2023 11:24 PMOne of the largest, most obvious dangers that affects the places I care about are worsening wildfires – both in Oregon, where I live now, and my home state of California. These wildfires will grow worse and worse as climate change continues, and the fact that “fire season” is a commonly used phrase is a tragedy to me.

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand SinksHad you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?
Adam Sysol 10/11/2023 11:22 PMI’ve never heard the term “silvopasture” before, but I have studied silvaculture for my major. After learning about it, I believe the largest advantage is how it can assist with reforestation – the damage done to the environment of the US by the livestock industry is well documented, and silvopasture is a great way to address it.

REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricityMicro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?
Adam Sysol 10/11/2023 11:19 PMThere are plenty of buildings on campus that could potentially be installed on - perhaps on the roof of the larger buildings like LINC. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildingsCities and towns need to plan for climate change. How can your city or town make its climate action plans equitable and socially just?
Adam Sysol 10/11/2023 11:18 PMA way Corvallis could make a more equitable climate action plan would be to help with the infrastructure equally across town, rather than just near the college. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Adam Sysol 10/11/2023 11:16 PMI’ve noticed that at least around the OSU campus, some buildings seems to be very accessible, while others aren’t nearly as accessible – some have buttons to open doors and ramps by every stairwell, while others have only one entrance that’s wheelchair accessible or only one elevator hidden on a floor. I have enjoyed the many paths around campus. One change I would really enjoy are more accessible ways to walk across streets or the train tracks.
