Health and Education
Watch Drawdown's Climate Solutions 101 Series
Family Planning and Education
I will watch Drawdown’s Climate Solutions 101 and share what I learned with others.
Electricity
Learn More about Wave and Tidal Energy
Ocean Power
I will spend at least 20 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of wave and tidal energy.
Industry
Plastics Audit
Reduced Plastics
I will complete a plastics audit to see where plastics show up in my life and determine how I can reduce the use of single-use plastics.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Cook With Sustainable Seafood
Improved Fisheries
Using the Seafood Watch guide, I will feature a sustainable seafood ingredient in a new recipe.
Electricity
Support Companies Leading in Green Energy
Utility-Scale Solar Photovoltaics, Distributed Solar Photovoltaics
I will use my spending power to reward companies leading in creating or purchasing green energy and incentivize others to invest more in green energy.
Buildings
Learn about 'Green Gentrification'
Multiple Solutions
I will spend at least 25 minutes learning about green gentrification and how it relates to city planning for climate action.
Health and Education
Support Businesses Owned by Women, POC, or Immigrants
Sustainable Intensification for Smallholders
I will spend 25 minutes researching and shopping from 2 businesses owned by women, people of color, or immigrants.
Land Sinks
Forest-Friendly Foods 2
Tropical Forest Restoration
I will replace or remove the palm oil, coffee, and cocoa products in my current diet that are known to contribute to deforestation.
Transportation
Go by Bike
Bicycle Infrastructure
I will commute by bike 3 miles each day and avoid sending up to (___) lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Industry
Practice the 5 Rs
Recycling
I will practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Smaller Portions
Reduced Food Waste
I will use smaller plates and/or serve smaller portions when dishing out food.
Health and Education
Fund Family Planning
Family Planning and Education
I will donate to supply a community with reproductive health supplies.

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and EducationWhat was an inspiring thing you learned in Drawdown's Climate Solutions 101 Series?
Maggie Ward 10/10/2023 12:31 PMI thought it was inspiring how they talked about us not being too far gone for climate change. Sometimes its a very sad and frustrating topic to discuss because there doesn't always seem to be a lot of hope, but it was reassuring to hear that there is. I found all of the different scientific prospects and technologies that are advancing every day interesting and hopeful. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land UseWhat did you cook and how did it turn out? Can you share a recipe on the feed for others to try?
Maggie Ward 10/09/2023 6:22 PMI purchased sockeye salmon farmed out of Washington because that was the best choice recommendation on Seafood Watch. I made a lemon-baked salmon and it was delicious. Here is the recipe: https://foolproofliving.com/sockeye-salmon-recipe/ -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricityWhat did you learn about wave and tidal energy? How do they compare to other energy sources?
Maggie Ward 10/09/2023 6:14 PMWave energy is a renewable energy source that is created using the power of ocean waves. Wave energy uses the vertical motion of the waves and the energy they produce which is captured by equipment placed on the ocean surface. The kinetic energy of the waves turns a turbine attached to a generator that ultimately powers something.
Tidal energy is a renewable energy source created by the ebb and flow of the ocean's tidal currents. Tidal currents that pass through constriction points flow faster with more power and are more efficient for this energy source. This form of energy creation is still up and coming and there is plenty of research on the tides and devices to harness their power being done.
These energy sources differ from other forms of energy because water is more dense making it more powerful. It is harder to harness because of the salt and the difficultly of working in water, but the potential is great. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustryWhat was the hardest item to reduce using or cut out that is plastic? Did you find a way to do it?
Maggie Ward 10/09/2023 6:01 PMI found that grocery products in general produce a lot of plastic waste through packaging, much of which was unnecessary. It was hard to reduce that particular plastic because a lot of the items in glass or better packaging cost more which isn't always feasible for me. However, I did attempt to buy in bulk for many of the items I could.
