What are some attributes of an offset that you should consider before purchasing them?

Firstly, it's important to make sure that the offset is real and verifiable - that you're actually supporting something that will offset your carbon emissions. It's also important to make sure that it is actually making a positive difference, and a permanent one. In other words, not just shifting the harm elsewhere or putting it off for a few years.

What are some more "Rs" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?

How about "reheat"? Saving my leftovers for later instead of throwing them away so I don't waste food!

Haiden, I think this is a great "R"! I like using leftovers so much that I plan my meals for the week to include ingredients that will play together nicely later in the week, like making extra rice when I cook lentils so I can make fried rice with that rice and any leftover vegetables (peas, carrots, corn, and so forth). My mother used to make the most delicious hashes, soups, and casseroles from leftovers, and I try to follow her example.

How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?

When I spend time outdoors, I find myself noticing the small things about my environment. Whenever I take the time to explore nature, I find something new that I hadn't noticed before. Especially now, in the fall, there is so much evidence of how the environment is constantly changing: from more obvious things, like the leaves, to more subtle things, like decaying stumps or the changing levels of a stream. It's a good reminder to keep paying attention to the environment - not only how it changes naturally, but how it's being changed as well.

What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

I had been using single-use paper towels around the dorm, which I have substituted for washable and reusable cloths. I will continue to keep paper towels around, but aim to use them much more sparingly or avoid using them when possible

Remember years ago where 1 paper towel/day was recommended. I've never forgotten and often let them dry to reuse. Just a thought.

I've been continuing to recycle plastics and cardboards that I use in the dorm. I have also invested in a Brita water filter to cut down on my usage of plastic water bottles

How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Alyssa Ebert's avatar

If we know the differences between use by, sell by, and best by, we can know when food is actually bad, or when we can still eat it

What have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?

I've seen some cool nature and enjoyed seeing wildlife. I went off campus to a river park and saw many snakes, frogs, and bugs that were all very important to the ecosystem. One thing I don't enjoy is walking on campus as much, this is because there is not a lot of trees and nature to look at, more just brick. I would like to see better trails in the woods, more nature, and green spaces at RIT.

Reusing: When I do get any trash, I try to figure out a way to use it again, like using old plastic containers to store something new.
Reducing: I try to limit the amount of plastic and single-use items I buy and use on the daily.

    Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?

    Evy Sweasey's avatar
    Evy Sweasey 10/15/2023 11:48 AM
You can save money by reducing your food waste, since you do not have to buy as much wasted food. Another good thing about smaller portions is that it is healthier and can allow you to eat better.

Mindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?

I pay attention to how much I'm eating so I don't over eat. I then can save that food for later and don't buy as many snacks or other food I don't need.
